Why not maroon?

This week at One Single Impression the prompt is ‘Blue’.

Origin:
1250–1300; ME blewe < AF blew, bl(i)u, bl(i)ef blue, livid, discolored, OF blo, blau (F bleu) < Gmc *blǣwaz; cf. OE blǣwen, contr. of blǣhǣwen deep blue, perse (see blae, hue ), OFris blāw, MD blā(u), OHG blāo (G blau), ON blār. Ancient Greek lacked a word for blue and Homer called the colour of the sea “wine dark”, except that the word kyanos (cyan) was used for dark blue enamel.

I wanted to start by saying some personal stuff. Many of you have commented and/or emailed me about my recent posts. The truth is I’ve been struggling for several months now with depression. I am on medication which is helping to keep me going, but my creative mind has turned to mush. I’m also seldom online anymore as after work I’m too tired and on my days off, too busy with chores or trying to control my anxiety by reading or watching television. I’m also having on and – mostly off – therapy in an attempt to get myself moving again and at least feeling moderately content about living. I’m not having much any success in that endeavor. I can’t blame the multiples either because they are rarely around under the current circumstances. For those of you missing Rose I would have to state that it is extremely unlikely at present that she will be blogging or communicating. That’s not to say she won’t answer your email, but it may take a week or two for her to come forward out of wherever she is hiding. She rarely even talks to me anymore and I miss her sassy spark.

Returning to the prompt, I was surprised to discover that many Asian and African languages do not have separate words for blue and green but rather depend on the context of the object being described. The light spectrum lists blue between 440 and 490 nanometers. [A nanometer being a billionth of a meter in length.]

too ordinary
flowers water sky leaves grass
exotic hues named

Wow Brian, this sounds like tough times for you guys. Creativity gone, anxiety, depression, worn-out. Must be quite difficult to need meds, but know what they do to your spark.

Sending cyber-hugs, and heavenward prayer for real breakthrough.

    And a little kitten.

Sorry you are feeling so blue. (((HUGS)))

Hey, something simple that really helps the mood, and has many other health benefits, too, is taking a 1000 iu supplement of Vitamin D each day. My co-workers and I started doing this, and it really helps.

That’s exciting to me to learn that about blue and green. I am thinking of how water can seem to be one or the other depending on the light.

    Too ordinary….very beautiful.

I hope you find the peace that will heal your pain. God bless, friend.

I really like the simplicity inherent in your poem and how it reflects cultures and society’s take on color.

Lovely haiku, and I was fascinated to read what you said about Asian/African languages not having two separate words for blue and green. I’m so sorry for your struggles…sending good thoughts that things will be better soon.

Many times the color of Blue depends on the person and time it is being viewed.

    Peace to you.

A beautiful poem, very vibrant. I enjoyed it. Though I am new here, I just wanted to say that I am sorry you are having such difficulties. I have bipolar and anxiety so I can relate to a lot of what you are saying. I’m just emerging from a major six month long depressive episode and I know how hard it is. Take all the time you can for yourself and do whatever you need to get better. I’ll be wishing you many blessings and much peace.

    All the best,

    Jane

Go for a walk in the warm sunshine for me! Say hello to those exotic birds you have there, and the goofy looking palm trees :) Do you still have a pet cat?

Excellent haiku! And a very interesting lesson in language. Sorry about the personal blues and hoping it fades to a healing shade of peaceful color.
