Rockin’ Chair Writers Prompt #4

2008 July 25

Many land mammals are strong swimmers, elephants, tigers and bears come to mind, but the tiger is the one that may surprise people the most. One tiger in particular is semi-aquatic and that is the Royal Bengal Tiger (Panthera tigris tigris) that resides in the Sundarbans. This area is the world’s largest contiguous tidal mangrove forest at the mouth of the Ganges river spreading between India and Bangladesh. The Sundarbans tiger is considered amphibious with a population of between 500-600 animals across the region. The tiger’s diet is highly varied from deer and other mammals to monitor lizards and other reptiles, frogs, and fish; don’t forget about humans, but is forced to drink mainly salt water. This tiger regularly preys on the population of human beings residing within the confines of the numerous Preserves in the Sundarbans forest.

The villagers that make a living from the forest by fishing, honey collecting, wood cutting and other occupations do so with the constant stress and fear of being eaten. A common sight is a man wearing a face mask on the back of his head since tigers don’t usually attack from the front if they are spotted. In the villages, drums, firecrackers and other loud noises are used to ward off the Tiger God both day and night, but still humans are taken. The stress of living in a fast-paced city with a high-pressure job seems rather tame when compared to making a living where a tiger could be stalking behind every mangrove tree.

Is it any wonder that human beings in the distant past created entertainment as an antidote to the stress of being hunted by predators?

Each week there will be two prompts for the Rockin’ Chair Writers. Prompt A will always be the same each week. It’s for those of you who want an optional prompt not a specific prompt. As such, any creative theme is welcome whether it be a poem, a video, a painting, an audio clip; anything is welcome here. Prompt B will be specific instructions about a topic of interest and again, any media is welcome to fulfill the prompt. You see I don’t believe that ‘writing’ only takes place in words on paper or a computer. Writing is a state of mind when you capture an image and bring it to life. When you post something on your blog, bring it to life for us. It doesn’t even have to be fresh. If you want to dust off something from the attic archives, please do.

Each week at 12:07 am East Coast time in the United States, the new post will be published. (Provided WordPress doesn’t forget.)

*****************************************************************************************************************

Prompt A is: “Tell us what’s really on your mind.”

Prompt B is: “When you seek out entertainment to relax what gives you the most pleasure?”

The Only Rules:

  1. Express from your heart.
  2. All prompts are optional.
  3. Leave your permalink as a comment.

Y’all come back now, ya hear.

    Brian,
I couldn’t swim a hundred metres even if you paid me. I’m baaaaad. We’re off on holiday. I’ve been away from the blogosphere a while (ask Rose why), but I hope things will turn out for the better, and that I will be able to read my friends more and write more myself.
    Take care, bro.

I can only seek out entertainment if I’m wearing my blue suede shoes, if not I find no pleasure and I just can’t relax.

What’s really on my mind is making sure we get a crowd for this event:

Tigers are my favorite animals. I used to have tiger-themed stuff all over my place (back when I was single and in an apartment). Now it’s confined to my bedroom. Kind of mixed in with Hawaiian stuff, LOL.

What on my mind right now? How to balance all the work that needs to be done around here with wanting to go out and have some summer fun on this beautiful Saturday.

I know this isn’t a poem, but it does reflect what’s been on my mind lately, hence it’s for prompt A:

    TIGERS . . . . can be a bit distracting . . . if they are on one’s mind.
