Black Holes and a Ship called “Desire”

This week for Read~Write~Poem the prompt is to write a Sci-Fi themed poem. I really like this prompt as I enjoy reading science fiction books. If you ever have a chance to travel to the deep space mining colonies, maybe you’ll hear this drinking song that astroid miners sometimes sing when they return after a tour of duty.

Black Hole-Powered Jet of Electrons and Sub-Atomic Particles Streams From Center of Galaxy M87

I was lucky enough to find a miner to record this song, hope you enjoy his deep and husky voice. ;)

out past the halo
where the comets
do roam
out past the halo
where the cold
froze your bones
radiation will fry you
when the light
fades away
so come through the door
take your helmet
off here

so raise your glass high boys
for black holes
and beer
raise your glass high
for a ship
called desire
drink down that liquor
before you return
to that ship
called desire
and the black holes
of home

out past the belt
where the rocks
do tumble
out past the belt
where the ice
breaks in shards
gravity will grab you
when the astroids
spin by
so come through the door
take your helmet
off here

so raise your glass high boys
for black holes
and beer
raise your glass high
for a ship
called desire
drink down that liquor
before you return
to that ship
called desire
and the black holes
of home

Very nice. How did you get Kris Kristofferson to sing this? [clapping]

Btw — OC is actually in Naples, but he says that’s still miles away from you.

I love this! We can all identify with the ship called desire, that’s for sure! Great voice. I felt like I was at the Shannon Door Pub in Jackson, NH. listening to Marty Quirk sing his Irish ballads.

I got this visual of a whole room full of men singing this song. Nice job, Brian.

Hello numero uno fan, with a reception like that, I’m

Quill, he was having a beer and he agreed to sing. :)

    ((((Ann)))))

Was it still good the second time around?

Linda, I am very flattered that you like my voice. I never have.

Gautami, when you come back, I’ll have a fresh drink for you.

Marcia, that sounds like a line from the ‘Village People’. :P

    Paisley, I thought Rose’s story was why you’re likin’ sci-fi. ;)

Wonderful! Brian you know I love this topic, do you know I love poetry and drinking songs too? Fabulous post, made me day.

Oh excellent, a sea shanty for space sailors!

this is excellent science fiction: imagining regular life in an alternate universe. isn’t it delightful how beer-drinking translates to this futuristic lifestyle. and, of course, great science fiction has meaning in present times. so i enjoyed this on the “fun” beer-swilling fellow space traveler kind of way AND in the recognition of the black hole desire.

The question Anthony is when you fell in, into which Universe did you emerge?

Aniin BG, thanks and stay safe you.

Hazel, a triple threat, I really made your day. :D

Crafty, a shanty with a Scots lilt.

Thank you Polkadot. There will always be beer no matter what Universe you inhabit.

Y’all may have noticed last week that I’ve been leaving a comment on most posts with links to articles I come across. This link is to an article about Counter Sex Trafficking rescuing women trafficked from Moldova.

as a trekkie from day one space is always a good place to be in my book… it’s hard to imagine life w/o space… anyhooo… great song brian… cheers to the miner boys… i’ll take a schooner plz… this reminds me of the mines in the northwest of western australia a place called dampier… they come out after 10-12 hour days 7 days a week covered in red dirt and spend the rest of their days at the public bar/pub…

I kept thinking of “A Streetcar Named Desire”… Tennessee Williams and scifi… and also that animated flick “Titan AE”. Very catchy!

Hello Pie and welcome to the as yet unnamed bar. Very interesting info about the miners.

Hi Chickle, thank you. I sang this into the phone to record at Gabcast. First and only take.

Which universe did I emerge into?
    The head-thumping one :-)
