Hearing Love
Totally Optional Prompts, In The Ear. The challenge, to write a poem about sounds.
At Three Word Wednesday , Bone offers up three words as a prompt. Your mission is to write something–a poem, story, sentence, anything–using all three words. Leave a comment and a link to your blog if you participate.
This week’s words are:
Gossip
Naive
Station
Today’s poetry is dedicated to the memory of our cat Blessing. A series of American Sentences in 17 syllables.
He’d station himself by the door, listening for the engine’s approach.
The clatter of keys, he’d meow loudly all the gossip of the day.
Naive in the end, we’d thought his rumbling purr would never be silenced.
Thank you for all your heartfelt and compassionate comments on Blessing’s post yesterday. Diane and I are doing better, but the house is so, so quiet. Our other two cats miss Blessing as well and keep asking where he is. Grief is sharp and painful, but also serves as a reminder to keep your ears open to the sounds of love.

this touched my heart in ways you cannot know. I currently share my home with three wonderful cats that are as dear to me as my children. They have filled my life with much but none have been able to fill the hole in my heart that was left by the death of my beloved Midnight. It has been 4 years since his passing and my heart aches still. I am rambling. Just wanted to let you know you touched me. My heart goes out to at your loss. May the purring live on in your heart.
The series is so beautiful. Love shines through..
Hugs!
So tender.
I’m sorry for your loss, and the three sentences create a poetic memorial.
I remember two cats we had when I was little. Baby (white but named for his baby blue eyes) was a Cat of Very Little Brain, and Honey (named for her honey-colored tiger fur) was his sister and playmate. When Honey got hit by a car, I swear Baby cried real tears at Honey’s side as she lay on the blanket in our house, waiting for us to bring her to the vet and end her pain. That is an image that has stayed with me for 33 years and will stay with me for ever.
Brian, you created a scene for us, one that I will remember, it is a scene not only personal to you, but one repeated everywhere, both with beloved pets and beloved friends and relatives. Leon and I are glad you and Diane are doing better.
Great poem. I’m glad you wrote it in Blessing’s honor.
Simple eloquent. I think you captured an essence in here. I would frame this with a picture. Just a thought.
I did get your book, looking forward to reading it.

what a sweet tribute to blessing.
peach and “blessings” to you this new year.
The sharp edge will pass, but the grief will stay forever. I ache for you, but I am much sorrier for those who never have to grieve such a loss because they will also never know the joy a beloved pet can bring.
brian,, you know my heart is bleeding for you … as a side note,, i just want to let you know,, that i am actively reading your book and will do a review as soon as i complete it….
it is great to see your expressions of love for blessing’s life continue on…
(((((((((Brian)))))))))
Well done tribute – touching and tender. Stay well!
So sorry for your loss. I love cats.
These lines were great!
Thank you, one and all for your comments and for sharing your experiences.
Cats have such wonderful personalities, and it was nice to see how you were able to tell about it using this prompt.
I LOVE the idea of a cat telling gossip!
That’s so cute.
Sorry about the loss :-/
picturing Blessing meowing all the days business as you walk in the door is a great vision.
A well written tribute to a very special kitty.
((hugs))
Made me teary-eyed. It hurts so much when the attachment is so strong, I hope you & family will find the strength to get through this.
Thanks everyone again. I added Blessing’s picture at the top right. Diane and I are talking through our grief and sharing memories of him. Too soon to think about another cat and the two we have will have something to say about that anyway.
We had a dog that acted the same way so your words really hit home. These American Sentences were a perfect way of containing and displaying your grief.
They do talk (gossip), I swear! Well done. Sending big understanding hug.
Such a heartwarming tribute. So sorry, again.
Hi Brian — your American Sentences were such a heartfelt tribute to Blessing. Each one painted an incredible picture with tremendous feeling and depth.
What a wonderful tribute to Blessing. I am so sorry for your loss. We never truly get over losing someone/ something we are really close to. I can only hope that your pain will subside a bit so you can remember all the treasured times you did share with Blessing. Thanks for sharing something so painful with us. Have a nice weekend.
Thanks again and again for all your comments. You have eased my grief tremendously.
I’m so sorry for your loss. It’s amazing how much life a pet can bring to our home and our life.
I really love the second sentence, how he’d meow the gossip of the day
I’m not a pet person and I nearly didn’t read your post. However I did and you really tugged my emotional strings. A lovely tribute.
Hello, Michele sent me to say how sad I was to see that your sweet Blessings had passed. He was a most beautiful cat. I read both of your tribute posts and my thoughts are with you and Diane as you adjust to your loss.
Thanks again each and everyone of you.
